While Nintendo isn’t ready to unveil the Switch 2 just yet, company president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed some big news during the company management’s latest policy briefing.

Nintendo Switch software will be playable on this “successor” system. In addition, it has also been confirmed that Switch Online will be available on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware. Here’s the translated post shared on Nintendo’s Japanese social accounts:

Shuntaro Furukawa: “This is Furukawa. During today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will also be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Learn more about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”

As Furukawa noted, fans can expect more updates on the Switch successor (including additional details on compatibility with the current system) at a “later date.”

This official update follows ongoing rumors about the “successor” model supporting backwards compatibility. Nintendo has previously said its services and account systems would be carried over to the next generation so it can build a “lasting relationship” with consumers.

Nintendo also confirmed this week that plans for the Switch successor have not changed, and that it is still on track to be announced by the end of the financial year (March 2025).
