Manchester United fans have accused Pep Guardiola of being ‘confused’ after his humiliating defeat to new manager Ruben Amorim and Sporting Lisbon.
Amorim led Sporting to a stunning 4-1 victory over Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick as Sporting came from behind to win in Portugal, securing a famous victory over the 2023 Champions League winners.
It was the perfect result for Amorim, who will start his new role as Manchester United head coach on November 11. He replaces former manager Erik ten Hag, who was fired by the club last month.
Speaking to the media after the match, City manager Guardiola was asked about the prospect of facing Amorim again in English football this season.
And the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss used the question to take aim at City’s bitter rivals United.
“We will face them twice in the Premier League and maybe also in the FA Cup,” Guardiola said.
“That is not possible in the Champions League.”
United failed to qualify for the Champions League this season after finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, although they did secure a place in the Europa League with their FA Cup final victory over City in May .
United fans were quick to respond to Guardiola’s comment, with some claiming the City boss was ‘upset’ by Amorim’s appointment.
“What a bitter man. I love this downfall of Pep,” one United fan joked on X.
Another wrote: “The standard sour grapes. Guardiola is losing it. The Citeh bandwagon is going off the rails?”

A third commented: “Pep is losing the plot. Three defeats in attack and it doesn’t bother him.”
While a fourth put it simply: “He’s so upset.”
City will play United at the Etihad on December 15 and the return at Old Trafford will be played on April 5.
However, the first target for Guardiola’s side is a trip to Brighton on Saturday. United, meanwhile, host PAOK in the Europa League on Thursday, before another home match against Leicester in the Premier League on Sunday.
